Let's talk about modern music. What is generally considered modern: everything that is not called "classics", or works of modern composers, written according to strict academic standards, or maybe just…

Listen to video game soundtracks while you work.

I write this text, and in my ears there is a sound of triumphal pipes, pouring into the rhythmic rumblings of the violins. You know, you will read my article – turn on this track, find “Battlefield One”. You will focus a little better if he plays with the background, I promise. In the end, video game soundtracks are aimed precisely at this.

In general, at the moment this is the best life advice I received – listen to music from video games if you need to concentrate. After all, this is a special genre of music, created in order to enhance the sensations and, at the same time, to remain somewhere in the background, in the subcortex of the brain. It should enthrall and engage the player without distracting. In fact, the best tracks even help players complete tasks.
Many studies suggest that essentially any sound background improves concentration — most likely because it provides an opportunity to disconnect from other harsh sounds, such as coughing a colleague or opening a door that may distract. Music works best, but not any. The last single, who won the first place in the chart, will rather wake up your desire to stamp and sing along to him, rather than do an important business. Silence, on the other hand, on the contrary, slows down office staff, and they work less efficiently than their music-makers. Even some surgeons listen to music in order to get into the right state, and one study claims that with the accompaniment of a soundtrack they perform operations more efficiently and accurately. Not so much research is devoted to working with video game soundtracks. But after all, these tracks are ideal for working on several parameters at once. Without words. During the years of evolution, our brain learned to identify people in various ways. We recognize faces (even where there are none), and our ears are tuned to the frequency of the human voice. Therefore, other people’s conversations are very distracting – the brain is trying to shift the focus of attention from work to someone else’s speech. Coffee houses with crowds of people do not have such an effect, since the voices mix into one and are no longer distinguishable. But in an open-space human speech penetrates into the consciousness too often and in small portions, and this distracts. One study showed that constant background noise improved worker productivity, and alert system messages were the least conducive to concentration.
In the game soundtracks rarely come across human voices, and if they are, then most often it is just sounds (all sorts of “ooh”, “aaa”, “ooo” and so on), and not words. The strange exception was The Sims. On some in-game radio stations, the sims speak, but use a special artificial language – simlish – and therefore our ears do not perceive this noise as speech. The Sims soundtrack surprisingly promotes productivity, most likely due to the fact that it was created for a game in which you have to deal with the clock, to be honest, quite boring things. Paint the walls, arrange the furniture, order the Sims to go to the toilet, wait for them to eat the lasagna for lunch. Try to play The Sims in silence – it will be boring. But with a cheerful little music on the background I want to continue.
2. Quite even and low volume levels Most music, designed to entice the listener, often changes in volume level, because the transition from one state to another (from quiet to loud or vice versa) attracts much attention. And if suddenly the volume of a quiet track gets out at 11 o’clock at the moment when a person writes a sentence, he can get off. And we do not need it. We do not need surprises. The flowing crescendos for which video game music is famous are noticeable, but not distracting – they lead and guide the listener, which is what is required of them.
Even very loud background noise is distracting. One study said that loud sounds impair a person’s ability to process information, while low or medium volume background noise improves productivity and creativity. Fast tempo Not all classics are slow, but there is a reason why they consider it relaxing: most of the time, most classical songs are gentle and melodic. But we are not looking for calm tracks, we are looking for tracks that will stimulate the brain. Video game music, by definition, cannot be soothing – no one will spend 22 hours in a row in a relaxed state in the game. ). Composers need to create an exciting track that will not, however, be exhausting.
Therefore, for example, rap and hip-hop are great music for training: rhythm and tempo cheer up and make you engage. Studies claim that athletes do better with rhythmic music. These genres are also good if you have a routine work that is repetitive and does not require any special brain effort, since it is in music that the brain concentrates on the music.
