Unknown about Miles and not only

“The critics were still not up to me, but there was a demand for my albums. I could see it at least because around the same time Bob Weinstock (Prestige) gave me $ 3,000 to write my next records – more than before. I felt that I was moving in the right direction, and on my own terms, without compromising for the sake of recognition. And even if I managed to keep my principles up to this point, then in the future I was not even going to compromise them. ” [Miles Davis, 1955]My friend went to Finland last winter. I read an ad at Liceknig about the sale of analog equipment to a private radio station in Turku and drove off. From there, Studer brought a box with old ribbons to it. Then he called me and mysteriously said that there was something that I should hear …
Actually, in the analog era, record labels, sending copies of tapes to radio stations, often cut them into compositions. Conveniently: you put a single on an AEG piece of iron on one of the reels, and go on the air – no need to wind kilometers of tapes back and forth. Of the many tape “shorty” with hits like “hot Finnish goblins” and cool polar jazz, in the box were found records of Miles Davis 50s. A hipster-looking grandson of the host handed a friend a box with the words: “I didn’t care …” What does the average music lover know about Miles Davis? Great “Kind of Blue” and electric “Tutu”? For me, Myles began with the Soviet license Bags’ Groove, and I first learned about Rudi Van Helder for that first time. However, the great and terrible Shazam identified on the radio tape a few things from Blue Moods with Charles Mingus and something that was included in the Blue Note series “Miles Davis Volume 1-2-3” – everything was recorded at Van Gelder Studio in the town of Hackensack. Listening with delight, I could not get rid of the phrase Charles Mingus read earlier about working with Rudi on Hackensack: “Yes, he just destroys the sound of my double bass, I will never come to him!” I was looking for the Mingus record from RVG, but I had to look for “ Blue Moods “Miles …

The magic sound … And I set out to understand whether there were traces of their relationship with the RVG in history. How did the early sound of Miles & Co. come out? In the rare photos taken by Blue Note, number two, by Francis Wolfe, you can look at the details of Rudy’s parents living room: a large carpet on the floor, tall seven-starters with a Star of David, simple wooden chairs and spare folding ones, ground floor windows barred diagonally, a long table with heavy cases of tape recorders, amplifiers, mixers, a grand piano, Hammond organ, stands with microphones, snakes of wires on the floor.
This atmosphere is audible on the recordings – I can’t describe exactly how, but I can hear … From Miles Davis’ memories: “On Christmas Eve in 1954, we came to the recording studio with Milt Jackson, Thelonius Monk, Percy Heath and Kenny Clark and made a record with“ Prestige ”, which was called“ Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants ”. We were recording in a studio in Hackensack with Rudi Van Helder. There are a lot of rumors about this record – that Telonius Monk and I had strained and even vicious relations. For the most part, all this is nonsense and gossip, people just repeat them all the time, and they turn into facts, as it were. Actually, we played great that day. But I want to explain once and for all what happened between me and Monk. ”But about Rudi and the circumstances of Miles’s recording a word …

But if Hackensack, and later Englewood Cliffs, was the “home” of Miles, Train, Rollins, and Kenonball, what was their relationship with Rudy himself? “Our relationship was first and foremost,” Rudi recalled, “were professional. The musicians came to the studio to record, it was for that that they paid me … But during our last recording session with Miles and Art Blakey, it suddenly dawned on me that there was no special personal relationship between us. And I felt wildly sad. ”So, perhaps, the key phrase in our study! And what then interested Miles? During the recording period with Rudy with Train (John Coltrane), Miles once told Wainstoke: “I started to miss the space in the music, I needed more space …” – and changed the Mercedes to a white Ferrari with an open top for $ 8,000. I wonder how much Rudy paid for the session with Davis Weinstock and Lyon?
